Everychild Foundation Visits Campus in MRI Grant Finalist Stage Posted on May 29, 2025June 2, 2025 by Tyler Johnson On Tuesday, May 27, members of the Everychild Foundation visited LuskinOIC as part of their rigorous grant review process. We are honored to be among the eight organizations selected for a site visit. VP, Michael Sullivan, Board Member, Maureen Stockton & Chief Administrative Officer, Jamie Wells The Everychild Foundation’s mission—“We are dedicated to easing the suffering of children in the Greater Los Angeles area, whether due to disease, disability, abuse, neglect or poverty”—makes them a perfect partner for LuskinOIC. Nearly years ago, they funded the construction of our adaptive playground. The water feature on the Everychild Playground even inspired the creation of our beloved mascot, Ozzie. VP, Michael Sullivan hosts Q&A with Everychild Foundation Each year, the foundation awards a $1 million grant to a worthy cause in support of Los Angeles’ children. After a highly competitive application process with multiple levels of review, we have reached the site visit stage. In June, we will learn if we are selected as one of two finalists. Everychild Foundation tours new LuskinOIC Foundation space We are requesting Everychild’s support for LuskinOIC’s first MRI—a long-standing priority for our clinical and research teams. Having an in-house MRI will enable us to capture critical diagnostic images quickly and efficiently, especially for patients with little or no insurance. Currently, many of these children face wait times averaging 2.5 months. [Top image: Everychild Foundation visits Everychild Playground]
Global Innovation in Motion: LuskinOIC Builds Research Bridge From Milan Posted on May 27, 2025June 2, 2025 by Tyler Johnson When Dr. Edward Ebramzadeh arrived in Milan this March for a three-month sabbatical at the prestigious Polytecnico di Milano, he continued a scientific exchange that began decades ago. His host, Dr. Roberto Chiesa—head of the biomaterials division in the Department of Chemical Engineering—proudly displays his fellowship diploma from the J. Vernon Luck Research Center (JVL) at LuskinOIC alongside his engineering degrees. Dr. Chiesa’s fellowship diploma Between exploring Milan’s magnificent Duomo cathedral with visiting family members (both orthopaedic surgeons themselves) and presenting a seminar on fracture fixation biomechanics to biomedical engineering students, Dr. Ebramzadeh focused on developing joint projects in spine implant evaluation and innovative biomaterials applications. Even while embracing Italian culture—including weekend hikes in Como Province near the Swiss border with Dr. Chiesa’s family—Dr. Ebramzadeh has maintained his leadership role in LuskinOIC research through remote work sessions and regular Zoom meetings with the Los Angeles team. Dr. Ebramzadeh in Milan, Italy This cross-continental partnership exemplifies LuskinOIC’s commitment to advancing pediatric orthopaedic innovation through global scientific exchange—combining the engineering excellence of Italy’s top technical university with our institute’s specialized focus on improving care for children with orthopaedic conditions.

Inclusion in Action: Adaptive Sports Outreach Empowers Community Posted on May 27, 2025June 2, 2025 by Tyler Johnson This weekend, LuskinOIC was proud to sponsor the Long Beach Adaptive Sports Fair, which brought together more than 300 athletes with disabilities and 150 community volunteers for a day of inclusive fun. Participants of all abilities had the opportunity to try more than 10 adaptive sports during the second annual event held at Long Beach city College. Through our partnership with Thrive Adaptive, we also provided hands-on experiences for aspiring clinicians to work alongside people with disabilities and some of the area’s top coaches. The weekend’s impact didn’t stop there. LuskinOIC’s disability community liaison, Joe Holt, was invited by the city of Burbank as a dignified guest to celebrate its adaptive recreation program. The city also recognized the Burbank Leadership Council, a group of emerging leaders, for their yearlong fundraising efforts that resulted in $90,000 in adapted sports equipment. The new equipment includes two electric all-terrain vehicle wheelchairs—making city trails accessible for all for the first time—as well as custom fencing wheelchairs to support the city’s growing adaptive fencing program, now one of the largest in the country. None of this would be possible without the continued commitment of Burbank Parks and Recreation under the leadership of Diego Ceballos. Long Beach Adaptive Sports Fair

Building Hope, One Piece at a Time: A Sense of Home Day at LuskinOIC Posted on May 27, 2025June 2, 2025 by Tyler Johnson Over the past few months, LuskinOIC’s community of staff, board members, donors, and volunteers has come together to help those impacted by the devastation of the recent urban fires. From donating school supplies to teachers and students at Altadena Arts Magnet Elementary School to providing support to staff and patients in need, LuskinOIC recently partnered with the nonprofit, A Sense of Home, whose mission is to create homes for youth aging out of foster care. Unfortunately, many of their members fell victim to the L.A. fires and are in urgent need of support. To help with this initiative, LuskinOIC made a donation to purchase new furniture and had more than 50 staff and volunteers help build the items in the Luck Family Conference Center before they were delivered. Departments including Research, Fracture, Rehabilitation, Security, and many more supported the builds! Thank you to all staff and volunteers for continuing to support not just our patients, but our surrounding community in this time of need. [Top image: “LuskinOIC staff at A Sense of Home Day]

Bridging the Gap: How On-Site MRI Access is Transforming Pediatric Orthopaedic Care Posted on May 27, 2025May 27, 2025 by Tyler Johnson For children with private insurance, advanced imaging like MRIs can often be scheduled within days. But for families with public insurance or no insurance at all, the wait can stretch into weeks or even months. This disparity creates a two-tiered system of care with serious consequences. A seemingly minor knee injury can actually be a torn ACL or meniscus—injuries that, when diagnosed promptly, can often be repaired with minimally invasive procedures. But when diagnosis is delayed, what could have been a simple repair can deteriorate into a much more complex condition requiring extensive surgery, longer rehabilitation, and potentially lifelong complications. Patient on CT scanner bed. Time Matters in Pediatric Orthopaedics Children’s bodies heal differently than adults. Their growing bones and developing tissues mean that time is especially critical. A delay in diagnosis can lead to: Improper healing of injuries Development of compensatory movement patterns Secondary injuries as children adapt to pain Prolonged pain and suffering Missed school days and activities Psychological impacts from extended disability Bringing MRI Access to All Children At Luskin’s Orthopaedic Institute for Children (LuskinOIC), we believe every child deserves timely, high-quality care—regardless of their insurance status. That’s why we’re proud to announce the LuskinOIC Foundation’s Capital Campaign focused on adding an on-site MRI at our campus. This new resource means: Significantly reduced wait times for all patients Seamless coordination between imaging and treatment teams Child-friendly protocols designed specifically for young patients Specialized pediatric radiologists interpreting results The Community Impact For our community, this investment means more than just a new piece of equipment. It represents our commitment to healthcare equity and our belief that no child should suffer unnecessarily because of insurance status. With faster diagnosis comes faster treatment. Children return to school, sports, and normal activities sooner. Families experience less stress and financial strain from repeated appointments and prolonged care. And perhaps most importantly, we prevent many of the long-term complications that can arise from delayed treatment. Join Us in Making a Difference At LuskinOIC, our mission has always been to provide outstanding care for children with orthopaedic conditions, regardless of their families’ ability to pay. Our new on-site MRI facility is another step toward fulfilling that promise. We invite you to learn more about how we’re working to eliminate healthcare disparities in pediatric orthopaedics and how you can support this important work. Because when it comes to children’s health, every moment—and every child—counts. LuskinOIC is dedicated to providing world-class orthopaedic care to children regardless of their families’ ability to pay. May is for Movement! Celebrate National Physical Fitness & Sports Month with LuskinOIC Posted on May 27, 2025May 27, 2025 by Tyler Johnson May has sprung, bringing with it warmer weather, blooming flowers, and most importantly, National Physical Fitness & Sports Month! Here at LuskinOIC Sports Medicine Center, we believe in the power of movement and the incredible benefits it brings to both our physical and mental well-being. This month, we’re thrilled to champion the importance of an active lifestyle for everyone, from budding young athletes to seasoned competitors. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides clear guidelines on the amount and types of physical activity crucial for different age groups. For children and adolescents aged 6-17 years, the recommendation is 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity each day. This should ideally include: Aerobic activity: The majority of the daily 60+ minutes should be aerobic, such as walking, running, or any activity that noticeably increases their heart rate. It’s also important to incorporate vigorous-intensity activities at least 3 days per week. Muscle-strengthening: Activities like climbing or doing push-ups should be included at least 3 days a week to build strong muscles. Bone-strengthening: Activities such as jumping or running help promote healthy bone growth and should also be incorporated at least 3 days a week. At LuskinOIC, we witness firsthand the dedication and passion of athletes striving to achieve their goals. We are honored to be a part of their journey, providing expert care and support to help them recover from injuries and reach their full potential. This month, we want to shine a spotlight on the inspiring stories of two such individuals: Alex and Aria. Alex’s Story: The Power of Perseverance Alex’s inspiring journey with scoliosis is featured in our Sports Medicine campaign at LuskinOIC. Thanks to Dr. Anthony Scaduto and our expert team, Alex overcame the challenges to reach the pinnacle of US water polo, a dream once uncertain. Aria’s Story: Finding Strength in Recovery Meet Aria, the young archer whose story of perseverance is highlighted in our LuskinOIC Sports Medicine campaign. Despite early promise, using ill-fitting borrowed equipment resulted in shoulder injuries. Learn how LuskinOIC empowers young athletes to overcome setbacks and thrive in their sport. Alex and Aria’s stories, while unique, share a common thread: the unwavering commitment of athletes to their sport and the vital support provided by specialized sports medicine centers like LuskinOIC. We are proud to play a role in helping athletes of all levels get back to what they love, safely and effectively. This National Physical Fitness & Sports Month, we encourage everyone to embrace the joy of movement. Whether it’s encouraging your kids to participate in school sports or finding enjoyable ways to incorporate 30 minutes of activity into your own day, every step counts. Let’s work together to create a community that prioritizes physical well-being and celebrates the incredible power of the human body in motion. How can you celebrate National Physical Fitness & Sports Month? Get Active! Take a walk, go for a bike ride, try a new sport, or simply dance to your favorite music. Encourage Kids: Support opportunities for physical activity at school and at home. Make it fun and engaging! Spread Awareness: Talk to your friends and family about the importance of physical fitness. Learn More: Explore resources from organizations dedicated to promoting physical activity and sports. At LuskinOIC Sports Medicine Center, we are committed to helping you achieve your fitness goals and stay active for life. If you’re an athlete looking for expert care or simply seeking guidance on incorporating more movement into your routine, our team is here to support you. Let’s make this May a month of movement, health, and celebration!
Understanding Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders: Supporting Our Young Patients Posted on May 19, 2025May 19, 2025 by Tyler Johnson May is + (EDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD) Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding of these complex connective tissue disorders that affect many children and adolescents. At LuskinOIC, we’re committed to providing specialized care for young patients navigating these challenging conditions. What Are EDS and HSD? Ehlers-Danlos syndromes are a group of hereditary disorders affecting connective tissues—primarily the skin, joints, and blood vessel walls. Hypermobility spectrum disorders represent a range of conditions related to joint hypermobility that don’t meet the criteria for EDS but still significantly impact quality of life. These conditions manifest differently in each child, but common symptoms include: Joint hypermobility (often called being “double-jointed”) Joint instability and frequent dislocations Chronic pain Tissue fragility Early-onset osteoarthritis Delayed motor development Fatigue and poor stamina The Pediatric Perspective For children with EDS and HSD, everyday activities many take for granted can become challenging. Playground activities, sports participation, and even sitting at a desk for extended periods can cause pain or joint instability. Many of our young patients describe feeling different from their peers or frustrated by physical limitations. Pediatric cases are particularly complex because symptoms often emerge during crucial developmental periods. As children grow rapidly, their hypermobile joints may become increasingly unstable, requiring specialized approaches to care that evolve with their changing bodies. Our Approach at LuskinOIC At LuskinOIC, we understand that addressing EDS and HSD requires a multidisciplinary approach. Our team works collaboratively to create comprehensive treatment plans that may include: Physical therapy: Custom-designed exercises to strengthen supporting muscles around hypermobile joints and improve proprioception (awareness of body position). Pain management: Evidence-based approaches to help children manage chronic pain while staying active and engaged. Orthotics and bracing: Custom-fitted supports to stabilize vulnerable joints during activities. Surgical interventions: When necessary for severe joint instability, our pediatric orthopedic surgeons provide specialized procedures designed with growing bodies in mind. Supporting Your Child at Home If your child has been diagnosed with EDS or HSD, these strategies may help support their daily functioning: Maintain open communication with schools about necessary accommodations. Encourage gentle, low-impact physical activities like swimming. Create consistent sleep routines to help manage fatigue. Help them develop self-advocacy skills to communicate their needs. Connect with support communities where they can meet others with similar experiences. Raising Awareness and Building Understanding One of the greatest challenges for children with EDS and HSD is that these conditions are often invisible to others. A child who appeared fine yesterday might experience a painful joint subluxation today, leading to misunderstandings about the variable nature of their symptoms. This awareness month, we encourage families, educators, and communities to learn about these conditions and approach affected children with empathy and support. Small accommodations—like allowing short movement breaks during class or understanding modified participation in physical education—can make an enormous difference in a child’s daily experience. The Champion’s Journey Despite the challenges, we’ve witnessed remarkable resilience in our patients with EDS and HSD. Many develop creative adaptations, discover activities that work well for their bodies, and become advocates for others with similar conditions. At LuskinOIC, we’re privileged to support these young champions on their journey, helping them build strength, confidence, and the specialized care they need to thrive—during awareness month and every day of the year.

Wagner-Roop Estate Donates $100,000 Toward New MRI Technology Posted on May 1, 2025May 1, 2025 by Tyler Johnson Earlier this month, the LuskinOIC Foundation received a generous estate gift of $100,000 from the estate of Edyth Wagner-Roop. The gift honors her late husband, who was a LuskinOIC patient during his childhood. Throughout his life, Frederick Crouch Roop faced ongoing orthopaedic challenges and received treatment at various hospitals, but he and Mrs. Wagner-Roop never forgot the compassionate care provided by LuskinOIC. When it came time to plan their estate, they chose to give back to the institutions that had made the greatest impact. Thanks to their generosity, this $100,000 gift will be applied toward the purchase of a new MRI machine in our Advanced Imaging Center. This technology will enhance our ability to diagnose and treat pediatric patients with precision, compassion, and efficiency. We are confident that the Wagner-Roop family would be proud of the impact this gift will have on children for years to come. If you would like to learn more about planned giving and how you can leave a legacy of healing, please contact Mary Beth Perrine at mperrine@mednet.ucla.edu. $100K toward the new MRI in the Advanced Imaging Center from the Wagner-Roop estate.

A Legacy of Love: Mary and Alfred Carr Leave Nearly $50,000 to LuskinOIC Posted on May 1, 2025May 14, 2025 by Tyler Johnson Last month, the LuskinOIC Foundation received a heartwarming surprise: a generous $49,086.77 distribution from the estate of longtime supporters Mary and Alfred Carr. For more than 27 years, the Carrs faithfully supported our mission to provide world-class orthopaedic care to all children, making consistent and meaningful gifts through our direct mail campaigns. Though their contributions were modest in size, the Carrs’ unwavering support reflected their deep compassion and genuine belief in our work. Alfred, a dedicated employee of Northrop Grumman, retired early to spend more time with his beloved wife, Mary, a devoted homemaker. Together, they built a life centered on love, family, and generosity. Their five grandchildren remember them as the best grandparents ever—with very big hearts. Their legacy now lives on in the children who will receive transformative orthopaedic care because of their thoughtful planning. We are deeply grateful for the Carrs’ enduring legacy of healing and hope. If you would like to learn more about estate planning, please contact Mary Beth Perrine at mperrine@mednet.ucla.edu (Top photo: CEO, Dr. Scaduto with Patient Ambassador, Victoria)
