Polydactyly
A condition in which a child has more than five fingers or toes on 1, or on each, hand or foot.
Causes
The cause of polydactyly is unknown, although in some cases it can be traced back to an underlying hereditary syndrome.
Diagnosis
Before a baby is born, a doctor will perform an ultrasound and may be able to see the deformity. Once the baby is born, the doctor will be able to diagnose it by sight.

Surgical Treatment
Most cases of polydactyly are treated with surgery, by removing the extra fingers or toes when the child is between 1 and 2 years old.
